Help with Equations

  • Important: You cannot use the Die Roller to e-mail results to a Yahoo! Group or e-mail listserv unless the group or list is open to unregistered e-mail addresses.

  • A basic die equation is written as xdy (or xDy).

  • The first number, "x", indicates how many dice to roll. If you specify 4, four dice will be rolled and the results added. If omitted, one die will be rolled.

  • The second number, "y", indicates the number of sides the die has. If omitted, the number of sides is assumed to be six. You may also specify "%" here to indicate percentile dice (a synonym for 100).

  • Since the Die Roller is mathematical and not a simulation, you can specify dice that do not physically exist, such as a "d7."

  • You may add one extra calculation to the roll, as well. You can include "+" (for plus), "-" (for minus), "x" (or "X" or "*", for multiplied by), or "/" (for divided by). The operator must be followed by a positive integer, or it will be ignored.

  • Instead of a numeric modifier, you may specify "L" or "H" (or "l" or "h"), for "Low" or "High" roll. This is most commonly used as a "-L" modifier, to drop the lowest die, such as the common "4d6-L."

  • If you are dividing, you may specify "round up" or "round down" at the end of the equation. Rounding down is the default, but sometimes you don't want to do this, for whatever reason. Of course, if your result is an integer, your roll will not be rounded at all.

Examples

Here are some example die equations:

Equation Translation
d Roll 1d6
1d20 Roll 1d20
3d6+2 Roll 3d6 and add two to the total.
4d6-L Roll 4d6 and drop the lowest die.
2d10x2 Roll 2d10 and multiply the total by two.
3d23/H round up Roll 3d23, divide the total by the value of the highest die, and round up to the nearest whole value. Not sure how useful this is, but you can do it...
d% Roll percentile dice (1d100).
